Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t actually that difficult to make your voice sound better. More often than not, the people you listen to on the radio weren’t born sounding the way they do.
Although some people are born with naturally gifted voices, most singers still have to practice consistently to keep up their vocals.
The good news is that you too can use these practices for your own benefit and learn how to improve your singing voice. Read on to find out how.
Each person is born with a different voice and vocal range. So you have to learn to work with what you already have and make the most of it.
Here are a few things that everyone can benefit from if they want to improve their singing voice.
Drink water. Seriously, drink a lot of water. It sounds too easy, doesn’t it? But you would be surprised at how many people’s singing problems can be traced back to not getting enough H20.
If you plan on performing with your vocal cords, you will have to make sure you stay hydrated at all times.
Obviously, the amount of water you need would depend on multiple factors, like your height, weight, etc. But a general rule of thumb is to consume around half to one ounce of water for each pound you weigh every few hours, depending on the weather; since the summers can be more dehydrating than winters.
Water temperature is also important if you are a singer. Cold water constricts your vocal cords which damages your voice. Warm water that isn’t too hot is perfect; at least around the time you are practicing your vocal cords or performing a song.
This is a very simple technique, but it can take years to perfect. So don’t be harsh on yourself if you struggle with this for a while and don’t give up too easily. To use the full potential of your diaphragm, you have to learn to breathe all the way to your stomach, instead of just your chest.
Practice by keeping your shoulders low, your chest relaxed, and breathe nice and deep. Remember that when you use your full lungs, your stomach expands, not your chest. A good way to practice breathing is to inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, and repeat. You can even exercise for 6 counts if you can manage that.
This is probably the most important tip to take care of your throat and mouth muscles before singing. Your singing voice is a muscle, and just like any other muscle, it needs to warm up before it can get into full on exercise-mode to avoid any unnecessary damages.
There are a lot of warm-up exercises for your vocals that you can benefit from. Practice scales, improve your tongue-soft palate coordination, repeat tongue and lip trills, and even simply hum before singing to experience great improvement in the quality of your singing voice.
Another very important aspect of developing a strong vocal range is your posture. Sagging shoulders, slumped back, hunched over stance, and even a titled head can negatively impact your singing voice by blocking the air-flow through your body.
You know that proper breathing plays an important role in improving your singing voice. To allow for the air to pass freely through your lungs, stand straight with your knees unlocked, and your feet placed shoulder-width apart. Keep your shoulders and abdomen as relaxed as you can and tilt your chin down a little to help you hit the right notes. It can also give your voice more power and better control.
This may seem basic, but sometimes it is what you need to reach the full potential of your singing voice. Not only will it allow you to learn better ways on how to improve your singing voice, it will also help you find issues in your singing voice and how to fix them.
If you don’t think you can manage a full time class for singing, you can take an online course which will allow you to work on your own pace. An online course like 30 Day Singer can help you learn singing at the comfort of your own house, and is also completely free. Just keep practicing with it, and you are sure to see results.
Improving your singing voice takes time and patience. But if you are really passionate about it, then don’t give up, and surely you will be able to see results sooner than later.
