How to Clean Over the Ear Headphones

Do you realize that over time the sound quality of your over the ear headphones is bound to deteriorate? You don’t realize this, but this is mostly because you do not clean them regularly.

Most people rarely clean their over the ear headphones at all, which can lead to a number of problems. Although it may seem like a waste of time to do this now, you will be thankful once you realize that there are there are benefits to making this effort.

Benefits of Proper Headphone Care

Avoid spending money on replacements– Cleaning your headphone pads will allow them to remain in good condition for a longer period of time. The sound quality will remain above par, and you won’t feel the need to replace them anytime soon. When all is said and done, you’re saving money that you’d spend on purchasing new ones.

Increased comfort – Headphones that aren’t cleaned regularly will develop bumps and rough edges. Cleaning them will ensure they remain in pristine conditions, resulting in a higher level of comfort.

More sanitation – Over time headphone pads will accumulate dirt, dust, sweat and bacteria, which could at its worst cause ear and skin problems. By routinely cleaning your headphone pads, you ensure that that they are always sanitary.

Guidelines to Clean Your Headphones

Removing the ear pads and cleaning with lint roller– Grab the ear pad by its fabric, and gently pull away from the ear cup as it slips off. Collect any dirt or dust on the headphone pad by rolling a lint roller.

Soak Headphone pads – Fill a bowl of warm water with one tablespoon of laundry detergent. Squeeze your headphone pads within the solution to ensure they are completely soaked.

Next, deeply scrub them all over with your fingers to ensure you are getting deep into the fabric. Once done, squeeze both the pads till most of the water is out. Then, place the pads to soak within water at room temperature. Rinse thoroughly before giving them one last squeeze.

Let them out to air dry. Before re-attaching the pads back to the headphones, give them one last lint roll.

Using a toothbrush and tweezers – Once the headphone pads have been removed, use the toothbrush to clean the corners and get rid of the dust and grime. Unscrew the headphones to clean out any dirt accumulated in the fiber filter. Using a pair of tweezers remove any dirt or material stuck within the headphone speakers as well.

Instant Wipe Down – As soon as you are done using your over the ear headphones, immediately wipe them down using a soft dry cloth. You can use any clean piece of clothing including your shirt; however, it would be best to use a microfiber cloth. By wiping down your headphones after every use, you’re eradicating the sweat or debris being absorbed within the cushions.

Clean with Soapy Water Weekly – If you do not use your headphones daily, you will not need to complete this step often. Start by wetting a soft washcloth with warm soapy water. Ensure the cloth does not get soaked. Gently wipe your headphone pads a couple of times. Let them dry before using them or putting them away.

Condition Periodically – This guideline only applies if your headphone pads are composed of protein leather coating. First, you’ll need to purchase some special leather conditioner. The conditioner will last you awhile since you will only need to use it four times a year. The only thing you have to do is squeeze a little bit of leather conditioner onto a microfiber cloth and wipe down your headphone pads. Use very little conditioner otherwise you might run the risk of trapping moisture within the cushions, which will cause them to start molding.

Replace Headphone Pads Frequently – Even if you wipe your headphone pads down weekly and clean them using conditioner, you need to accept the fact that there is a shelf-life for these pads. Replacing your headphone pads will not be too costly and save you a lot of pain in the long run. Plus, a pair of new headphone pads will make your headphones feel new without you having to spend a couple of hundred to get new headphones.
