Is It Possible to Learn Singing Without a Teacher?

It is true that having a professional teacher to learn just about anything can help you a lot. But some people just don’t have the time to take proper singing lessons no matter how hard they try to work around their schedule.

So if you are one of those people and are wondering how to learn singing without a teacher, then you are at the right place.

There are simple ways that you can practice regularly to improve your singing voice. It may take more time and effort than it would with a teacher, but that doesn’t mean the results wouldn’t be as good as you want.

So read on to find out how to learn singing at home without a teacher.

How Do You Become a Good Singer?

Before we learn singing without a teacher, we have to understand what makes a good singer. There are certain aspects that work together to make you a good singer. Thsre include:

  • Being Able to Control Your Pitch: Getting your pitch under control is the most important aspect of becoming a good singer. Because as soon as you start to gain control over your voice, you begin to develop your best voice. If you get carried away, warble off key, or falter and lose your footing on some notes, it all means that you need to work harder on your pitch.
  • Accept and Use Your Own Voice: Imagine how Michael Jackson would have sounded if he tried to imitate Elvis? Or where would One Direction be if they were trying to impersonate The Beatles? Everyone is born with a different voice and a different vocal range. So instead of trying to impersonate your favorite singer, understand your own vocal range and work around it. Listen to yourself to understand your own strengths as well as shortcomings and work on improving them.
  • Strong Foundation: The foundation of your singing voice is your vocal cords. And to reach your best singing capabilities, you have to build a strong vocal cord support. There are multiple techniques and exercises that you can practice to strengthen your vocal cords, which we will get to in a minute. Once you gain control over these muscles, the rest of your journey to learn singing will become a lot easier.
  • Style and Volume: Just like our voice and vocal range, we all have our own style and volume as well. A good singer understands both of these things and makes sure that their style and volume works well with the song they are singing. Trying to sing notes louder than your range allows or mumbling your vocals are signs of non-professional singers.
  • Becoming Self-Aware: Finally, you have to be consistently aware of your voice. This will allow you to be more attuned to knowing if you are able to hit the right notes, produce the right pitch and overall have a better idea about how you sound. And with a little knowledge, you’ll be able to understand what is damaging your voice and work on that too.

How to Learn Singing at Home Without a Teacher

Now that you know what makes you a good singer, it is time to get to how to learn singing at home without a teacher. There are a lot of exercises and techniques that you can practice on a regular basis to improve the overall quality of your voice.

· Learn to Breathe & Sing Through Your Diaphragm

This may come as a surprise, but most people don’t breathe properly. They do not use the full capacity of their lungs, which in turn prevents them from using the full potential of their vocal cords. To breathe properly, you have to learn to do it through your diaphragm.

To do this, practice keeping your chest relaxed, your shoulders low, and your breaths nice and deep. Remember that when you breathe to the full capacity of your lungs, it is your stomach that expands and contracts, not your chest. As an added benefit, proper breathing techniques don’t just improve your singing voice, they also lower stress and promote a healthy state of mind.

· Listen to Yourself

A great way to understand your weakness is to record yourself while singing songs that you already know. You don’t have to do it professionally, of course. Just take your phone or your computer, hit record on the Voice Recorder and start singing. Afterwards, compare your voice with the original version of the song and jot down all your mistakes. Were your breaths to short? Was your vocal range too weak? Were you hitting the wrong notes?

Remember that no matter how great you sound, you won’t actually sound like the original singer. Hell, they don’t sound like they do in the songs. A lot of sound processing happens before the song is released to the public. What you have to do is understand your own voice but keep the original singer as a casual reference. One thing you can do is to listen to live performances to get a better framework.

· Warm-Up

Just like any other muscles, your vocal cords need to get exercised too. Vocal warm-ups are necessary before practice AND before performing a song. There are a lot of exercises you can perform to warm up your vocal cords so you can take better advantage of our vocal training.

Some of these exercises include practicing scales, repeating tongue and lip trills improving your tongue-soft palate coordination, or just humming before getting to the singing part.

· Take Care of Your Voice

If you are serious about singing, then your voice is your instrument and you have to take care of it. If you had a piano or a guitar, would you leave it out to gather dust to get rusty? Of course not! Treat your voice the same way.

A good place to start is to keep yourself hydrated. Drinking at least half an ounce of water for each pound you weigh every day; if you live in a particular hot area, double the amount of water. This will keep your vocal membranes hydrated and your voice healthy. Avoid doing things that will damage your vocal cords; like screaming. Smoking can do great damage to your voice too, so it’s better to give that up.

· Work Your Face Muscles

There are ten groups of muscles in your face and neck, and it is important to exercise those muscles in order to keep them resilient and flexible to maintain control over them. So stretching out these muscles regularly will contribute to keeping your vocal cords ready for stronger singing techniques.

Some ways you can keep your face muscles loose and limber include; smiling wide, puckering your lips, yawning, arching your eyebrows, rolling your eyes.

· Understanding Posture

Aside from your vocal cords, the thing that plays the most important role in your singing is your posture. If your posture isn’t correct, it will block the air flow through your body, which, as you already know, isn’t good for your singing voice. If you sit or slouch while you sing, you won’t be able to use your full singing potential, no matter how much you try.

The best singer stance for developing your vocal range is by standing straight with your knees unlocked, and your shoulders and abdomen relaxed. This will allow you to breathe properly through your diaphragm. Another way you can practice your vocal range is by lying down straight on your back and singing to the roof. This helps you keep your body in a straight line for practice, and can be imitated when you have to sing standing up.

· Be Regular With Practice

It’s clichéd, but it’s true; “practice makes perfect”. When you practice on a daily basis, you will eventually find your voice. It may be difficult at times, and you will feel like giving up. But if you just stick through that time, and continue practicing even if you think you sound bad, you will eventually start to see improvement.

So be consistent with your practice. Set aside a time of your day and make sure your practice your vocals for at least thirty minutes. Make sure you warm up beforehand. Because if you don’t have a routine, you won’t see the results you desire.

· Online Course

We understand that you are here because it is difficult for you to manage a full time teacher to help you improve your singing voice. But online courses are the next best thing. Not only do they help you with improving your singing voice, they let you do it at your own pace.

An online course like 30 Day Singer lets you do just that, and it is absolutely free. Using this course, you will be able to reach your singing goals even faster.

· Become Confident

No matter what you want to achieve, confidence plays a significant role in it. And is especially necessary in trying to improve your singing voice. None of the above tips would matter if you don’t believe in yourself. Your lack of confidence will be visible in your performance.

So believe that you can, own your voice and go kill it on the singing floor! Don’t worry about looking stupid, because your confidence will take care of it.

So there it is. You can learn singing without a teacher; all it requires is a little knowledge and a lot of practice. So go, start singing right away to see results soon.
