5 Tips to Learning a New Piano Piece Quickly

For a lot of musicians, learning a new piano piece is a frustrating experience. Sometimes it becomes difficult to gauge the progress. They can spend hours and hours memorizing the piece, only to be disappointed by their performance. However, with Piano for all and the right techniques anyone can easily learn a new piano piece quickly.

If you want to know how to learn a new piano piece quickly, follow these 5 tips to help you make your experience less confusing, and more fun.

1. Analyze the Piece Thoroughly

This is one of the most helpful tips. Learning a new piano piece should be done exactly how one practices. You should start with small sections, with separate hands, and go slow. Without dissecting the piece, and analyzing the finer details, you will have a problem solidifying your memory of the piece.

2. Avoid Relying on Only Muscle Memory

Repeat sections several times, but do not do it in excessive amounts. You must understand why you choose to work a certain way. For instance, try to gauge the sequence or finger pattern. Memorize the piece with the state of consciousness, because the repetition will give room to bad habits settling in. Once you develop these habits, it will be difficult to undo them. Also, you must remember that muscle memory is not reliable. If anxiety kicks in while you are performing in front of an audience, you will be in trouble.

3. Be Creative

Memorization of the new piece happens in the midst of the initial learning phase. Be creative with your practice methods, and memorizations will occur as a natural phenomenon, instead of something that is forced.

4. Test the Memory

A lot of people ignore this important step. You can spend many hours practicing, but you will not know for sure how secure your memory is until you perform the new piano piece. Organize a couple of test runs before your big performance at least a month in advance. First play for yourself, then invite a friend over and play for them. You can try to organize a small home concert, invite a few friends and family members, and then play the new piano piece that you learned. Not only it is a great way to text your memory, but it will also help you build confidence.

5. Expect Some Hiccups

There will be some hiccups in the learning process, and it is okay because it happens to all of us, as Frederick Douglas said “Without a struggle, there can be no progress”. It can be frustrating when you spend a lot of time learning a section, successfully getting the hang of it, only to forget it the very next day. However, don’t let this small hiccup bring you down. Evaluate where you are struggling the most, and then put extra effort into it. Try to find out why memory slips are occurring during the test runs, and not in the practice sections. Is it the nerves? Or some other issue.  Keep practicing and continue to be optimistic.

Hope this was helpful. Don’t give up, remain optimistic, and keep practicing every day until you are content the new piece. Keep in mind the notes, and know that making mistakes is part of the learning process. With the help of Piano for all, you can learn how to learn a new piano piece in no time.
