Whether you are new to playing the piano, or are trying to refresh your blurry skills from childhood, these piano practice tips will allow you to reach your goals faster. They will also help you sustain your passion for the instrument so you don’t end up giving up.

Following these tips will keep you focused, so you will be able to measure your improvement and stay consistent.

So here are a few of our tips that will surely benefit your progress and improve your piano skills.

· Find the Passion

This is the most important step. It is human nature to be more engrossed in things that interest them and ignite their passion. So if you really are passionate about playing the piano, all you’ll have to do is tap into that vibe and you will be on your way to progress. But if you are only forcing yourself into it for the sake of a hobby, you will soon get frustrated and give up.

So find your passion, and follow it. And if it isn’t piano, that’s okay too. You should be doing whatever comes naturally to your heart.

· Set Clear Goals

If you think you can just wing it while learning the piano, then you are wrong. You can’t just sit on the piano whenever you feel like it, play for a while without any set motivation and expect results.

Instead, you have to set a clear goal. Something like, “I will learn this chord progression”, or “I’m going to learn the opening of My Heart Will Go On” are the kind of goals you need to set to see progress in your playing skills. When you have such a clear picture in your mind, you automatically start working in order to achieve it. But make sure your goals are achievable, so you don’t end up getting disheartened.

· Divide Your Time for Fundamentals

You have to set a proper schedule for your learning, that’s a given. But within this set time frame, you have to divide your time for different things like scale, timing and accuracy. This will allow you to be able to play insanely technical pieces really quick. Precision comes with practice, and this technical skill can only be gained by repeating the same practice again and again until it becomes natural to you.

· Use a Metronome

The key to playing a good tune is by learning it’s timing; because if you aren’t playing at the right speed, what’s the point anyway? And a metronome will help you with that. When trying to learn a new song, it is a good idea to start learning it at much fewer beats per minute.

For instance, if you are learning a song that plays at 500bpm. Starting at 500bpm will have you scratching your head. So try playing at 50bpm. Once you master that, increase your speed to 60bpm, and keep doing it until you reach the correct speed.

· Learn the Theory

You cannot play the piano, or any kind of music instrument, if you try to skip out on the music theory. Unless you are a musical prodigy, it is just not possible. So start with the basics, learn the easy notes, chords, scales, tones, semi-tones etc.

This may seem a little boring, but once you get the hang of it, you will understand how much it naturally improves your playing skills; since you will now know what you are doing instead of trying to learn by guess work.

· Finger Placement

Of course, all of your piano playing skills depend on your fingers, so it is necessary to learn the proper finger placement. This is also necessary for how fluidly you can play, since the transition from one note to the other depend on it.

It is also a good idea to flex your fingers before playing every time so they are loosened up. Just going up and down a single scale a few times is enough warmup for the fingers.

· Get a Teacher

A teacher will help a lot in learning the piano. But even if you can’t manage or fit one into your daily schedule, some kind of guidance is necessary for you to learn at a good pace. There are a lot of options available online that you can opt for as well.

The online course Pianoforall is one such option. It gives you comprehensive lessons that are easy to understand. And the best of all, you can learn at your own pace from the comfort of your home.

· Take Breaks

Do not push yourself more than your limits when trying to learn the piano. Too much information can end up becoming fatal as things get jumbled up in your brain.

So go at a balanced pace and understand your limits. And when you think you have learnt enough for the day, take a break and breathe. This way, you will be looking forward to your next practice instead of dreading it.
